Recorded during what would become an annual tradition, an extended Spring residency at the historic New York City venue, Play All Night also saw the return of the late Tom Dowd to the production board, echoing his role in the classic At Fillmore East. Drawing on the best of two nights from the 10-show run, this double-disc album is representative of the septet firing on all cylinders, and a lineup that to date was most reminiscent of the glorious era of its deceased founder Duane Allman. ...mp3-320kbps CBR, scans, info...........................................................................................................Password:zinhof V.A. - Rogues Gallery (2006) & Son of Rogues Gallery (2013) [Pirate Ballads, Sea Songs & Chanteys] Johnny Depp and director Gore Verbinski hatched the idea for Rogue's Gallery while filming "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest"--that idea being to cast genteel rock superstars like Bono, Lou Reed, Bryan Ferry, Andre Corr, and Sting to reinterpret gritty seafaring standards for an exhaustive 43-track double-disc set produced by Hal Wilner. Throw in a bunch of credible folk stars (Loudon Wainwright III, Richard Thompson), their offspring (Rufus, Teddy) and a string of other curious characters (Jarvis Cocker, Antony) and what results is one of the strangest compilations in recent memory, if not exactly the most historically authentic or, well, digestible. Nick Cave embraces the role just a little too hard on "Fire Down Below," while Ferry can't help but sound like he's singing for the cast of "The Love Boat," but cut through the chaff and there is some real bootie here: Bono's "Dying Sailor to His Shipmates," Jolie Holland's "The Grey Funnel Line" and "Boney" by a mysterious tramp called Jack Sh**, which must be some kind of anagram for Johnny Depp. - amazon.com Not every song sung at sea is a sea shanty. Shanties are work songs designed to be sung to accompany labor on ships at sea, and they are designed to flow and be sung in the rhythm necessary for the task at hand, a task that may well need timed and unison movement. Sea songs, on the other hand, are songs that chronicle life at sea, and they are generally more narrative and personal, while a pirate song is, well, a song about pirates, or a song sung by pirates. All three of these maritime song styles are represented on this two-disc, 36-track collection, which is an expanded sequel to 2006's Rogue's Gallery: Pirate Ballads, Sea Songs & Chanteys, and it's clear that these are songs of utility and personal definition and declaration rather than anything designed to court the pop charts in any fashion. Not that there isn't star power here, because there's plenty of that, but like the first installment, the songs themselves are the true stars. Among the highlights on this fascinating set are Shane McGowan's bleary rendition of "Leaving of Liverpool," Beth Orton's hushed, atmospheric "Bamboo (River Come Down)," a pairing of Tom Waits and Keith Richards on a stirring version of "Shenandoah," and Michael Stipe and Courtney Love's "Rio Grande," along with the only two cuts here that weren't recorded specifically for this project, Frank Zappa's "Wedding Dress/Handsome Cabin Boy" and Marianne Faithfull's "Flandyke Shore," but everything on these two discs fits into the theme and flow. And even that isn't all that difficult, since singing about loss and singing about redemption are really two sides of the same coin, a part of the same conversation. Leo Welch understands this, and he's had to. Born and raised in Sabougla in the hill country of Mississippi, Welch worked over 30 years in the region's logging camps, spending his nights and days off playing picnics, house parties, and jook joints, developing a raw and urgent electric guitar style that put him in a long line of Mississippi trance guitarists that included R.L. Burnside and Junior Kimbrough. When the blues gigs began to get rarer in the mid-'70s, Welch simply packed up his approach and blues prowess and took them to the churches, developing a style that combined the grit and dirt of Mississippi blues guitar with the passionate urgency of Southern call-and-response gospel, which puts him squarely in the lineage of another great gospel guitarist, Mississippi Fred McDowell. This debut set, released when Welch was 82, is pretty much his church set done up straight with no frills in a recording studio, and it's a stunning and fiery thing to hear. From the relentless opener, "Praise His Name," this is an album of redemptive gospel blues that crackles with urgency, passion, and relentless energy. Welch is no traditionalist, and he has stated that he doesn't have a divisive mind when it comes to either the blues or gospel, enjoying both, and whether one sings about mortal love or God, it's all about longing. This is a marvelous album, a revelation, even, with striking electric stomps like "Somebody Touched Me," which sounds a bit like a raw garage band doing a slowed-down gospel version of Chuck Berry, and delicately balanced acoustic numbers like "Mother Loves Her Children" and "The Lord Will Make a Way" showing that Welch has found a way to make the blues and gospel speak together in one voice. - allmusic.com TRACKS: 01. Every year, another bright young thing, famous for a finger-snap, then forgotten forever. Albert Castiglia has walked a different path. As the man who once sang, The road to riches is playing guitar, thats why Im living inside my car, hes spent two decades climbing the greasy pole and paying dues with interest. Now, Solid Ground is payback. Released in February 2014 as Alberts debut album for Ruf Records, Solid Ground will let the global blues-rock scene discover what the hardcore fans have known from the start. Namely, that here is an artist who sings from the gut, shoots guitar licks from the hip and writes songs that articulate your hopes, fears and heartaches. Solid Ground is my best album to date, says the 44-year-old bandleader, simply. I put more time, love, blood, sweat and tears into this recording than any of the others, and it shows. I love every song on it and Im sure therell be something for everyone to like. Hes right. Recorded at Fat Rabbit Studios in Glen Ridge, New Jersey, this album isnt just solid, its special. There are plenty of thrills in the musical execution, with Albert leading the line on vocals and guitar, backed by the crack team of Matt Schuler (bass/vocals), Bob Amsel (drums), Jeremy Baum (B3/piano/wurlitzer), Lou Bevere (guitar/vocals) and Debbie Davies (guitar/vocals) plus Dave Gross on multi-instrumentation and production. The pair played several subsequent live dates at the Baked Potato jazz club in Los Angeles, and encouraged other musicians to sit in, and gradually Rock Candy Funk Party came together from these live sessions, finally settling on a lineup of Bergman, DeJesus, bassist Mike Merritt, keyboardist Renato Neto, and, in 2012, guitarist Joe Bonamassa. The band released a debut album under the Rock Candy Funk Party moniker, We Want Groove, in 2013 through Bonamassa's label, J&R Adventures. "Rock Candy Funk Party Takes New York - Live At The Iridium", a live DVD/Blu-ray package, featuring over 100 minutes of music and a 30-minute documentary, and an exclusive live companion double CD, all filmed and recorded at the legendary Iridium Jazz Club in Times Square, New York City. With its reboot of classic 70s /80s jazz-funk, Rock Candy Funk Party (RCFP) delivers a sound thats as celebratory as the name suggests. Powered by a lineup of world renowned players including album producer Tal Bergman (drums), Joe Bonamassa (guitar), Ron DeJesus (guitar), Mike Merritt (bass), Renato Neto (keys), and Daniel Sadownick (percussion), the band came together for the sheer fun of making music, and a mutual love of genre-blurring grooves. Rock Candy Funk Party Takes New York - Live At The Iridium features eight live renditions of original tracks from We Want Groove that mash up funk, jazz, and rock with virtuoso musicianship, as well as four cover songs including Mr. Clean (Weldon Irvine), One Phone Call (Miles Davis) and two by Herbie Hancock Heartbeat and Steppin In It. Inspired to write some new music, Robben instead decided to challenge himself and his band by doing something hes never done before in his 40-plus year career: recording an album live in the studio, in one session. We had a great experience, says Robben, who was joined by guitarist Audley Freed, keyboardist Ricky Peterson, bassist Brian Allen, drummer Wes Little and trombonist Barry Green. We decided to make the record in a controlled environment, but treat it like a live show. The result is a soul-lifting collection of American roots music by one of the most respected living guitarists. Geils Band singer proves nothing can kill Wolf's charm, musicality and youthfulness. Wolf is the passionate impresario of his own musical world, sharing his love of classic country, soul and R&B with anyone who cares to listen. His enthusiasm is contagious on a series of duets: "The Green Fields of Summer" is a striking acoustic song where Wolf and Neko Case exude stark, autumnal beauty, and "It's Too Late for Me," is a lighthearted country lullaby about growing old that could have been written in 1955, with Wolf and Merle Haggard sounding like old running buddies quietly congratulating themselves for outracing the sunrise yet again. Midnight Souvenirs, Peter Wolf's seventh solo album is a continuation of the singer-songwriter's distinctive and eclectic tales that brighten and interpret a world gone noir. Following in the tracks of Wolf's Sleepless, which was honored by Rolling Stone Magazine as one of the '500 greatest albums of all-time,' the new collection gives hope to the love-wounded and promises "there's still time for the midnight wine," even if "sometimes you heal, sometimes you're scarred." And it is impossible to think of The Lovin Spoonful without thinking of John Sebastian. Sebastian, Zal Yanovsky, Steve Boone and Joe Butler formed The Lovin Spoonful in Greenwich Village in New York. Over several precious years, they produced several precious albums that yielded songs that both kept them in the Top Ten and, it would turn out, kept their delicious lyrics and melodies a part of our stream of musical consciousness for more than 30 years. What is remarkable, however, is that John Sebastian's solo albums for Reprise Records are every bit as wonderful as anything in his entire recorded oeuvre. For fervent proof of this, we are proud to offer our new collection of the five particularly wonderful albums he recorded for Reprise between the years 1969 and 1976, which we are calling Faithful Virtue: The Reprise Recordings. Faithful Virtue: The Reprise Recordings collects all five of his Reprise albums. The 1970 John B. Sebastian debut, 1971's Cheapo Cheapo Productions Presents Real Live and The Four Of Us (with the side-long epic "The Four Of Us" suite), Tarzana Kid from 1974 and his final Reprise album, 1976's Welcome Back. In addition, we have included both sides of his non-LP 1972 "Give Us A Break" single and, for the first time anywhere, his complete five-song performance from the original 1969 Woodstock Music And Art Fair in Bethel, NY. A leading proponent of the New Flamenco style, he was one of the first flamenco guitarists who has also successfully crossed over into other genres of music such as classical and jazz. Richard Chapman and Eric Clapton, authors of Guitar: Music, History, Players, describe de Luca as a "titanic figure in the world of flamenco guitar", and Dennis Koster, author of Guitar Atlas, Flamenco, has referred to de Luca as "one of history's greatest guitarists". De Luca was noted for his innovation and colour in harmony and his remarkable dexterity, technique, strength and fluidity in his right hand, capable of executing extremely fast and fluent picados. A master of contrast, he often juxtaposes picados with rasgueados and other techniques and often adds abstract chords and scale tones to his compositions with jazz influences. These innovations saw him play a key role in the development of traditional Flamenco and the evolution of New Flamenco and Latin jazz fusion from the 1970s. In 2004, he won the Prince of Asturias Awards in Arts and in 2010, was awarded an honorary doctorate by Berklee College of Music in Boston. Since 2004 he has greatly reduced his live performances in public, has retired from full touring, and now typically only gives several concerts a year, usually in Spain and Germany and at European festivals during the summer months. In 2005, he was nominated for producer of the year by the Latin Grammy Award for La Tana's Tu, Ven a Mi album. Though the two-time Grammy Award nominee is looking back with this comprehensive retrospective, hes still very much an active artist, and will mark his birthday with a special February 23 performance at New Yorks B.B. Kings Blues Club and Grill. When Johnny Winter was signed to CBS Records in February 1969, the sum paid to him was a record for a solo signing to the label: $600,000.00. Winter, who hailed from Texas, represented the vanguard of American blues-rock. Jimi Hendrix was riding high in 69 with his psychedelic blues, and the idiom had been co-opted by any number of British guitar-slingers, too, but Winter brought his own virtuosic sound. Like his brother and frequent collaborator Edgar, Winter was born with albinism, and encouraged from an early age to immerse himself in music. Winter found an affinity with the great bluesmen, something that translated to his gutsy, howling, soulful reinterpretations of classic blues standards. Plenty of those can be sampled on True to the Blues. The chronologically-sequenced (in order of recording, not release) box draws from 27 albums originally released on labels including Liberty/Imperial, Columbia, Blue Sky/Epic, Alligator, Point Blank/Virgin, Friday Music, Collectors Choice Music, Megaforce and Legacy. True to the Blues arrives two days after Winters 70th birthday, and roughly 55 years after he started wowing crowds with his guitar prowess. Releasing his first single at the age of 15, Winter was off and running; by the late 60s, hed signed with Columbia Records, kicking off a long association that endured into the 80s. Cuts from Winters Columbia releases are rounded up for the box, as well as recordings from later in his career all in all, True to the Blues collects 57 tracks from 27 albums, including some previously unreleased performances. Signing to Bell Records, the pair released the album, "Tomorrow Today" and undertook numerous tours of mainland Europe, and in particular Germany, where they regularly filled medium-sized venues and also supported the likes of The Nice and Deep Purple. Two further Hardin & York LPs followed: "Smallest Big Band In The World" and "For The World" before the pair decided to go their separate ways and pursue solo ventures. Hardin's solo career kicked off with November 1971's "Driving"/"Where I'm Going To SleepTonight" single which was swiftly followed by the 1972 LP "Home Is Where You Find It" and another single, "Why Does Everybody Put Me Down"/"Spend Your Money Honey". He then put his solo attempts on hold when he took part in the 1973 reformation of the Spencer Davis Group where he was again reunited with Pete York. The reunion lasted for just two LP's "Gluggo" and "Living In R Back Street", before the band again split up. Hardin along with York and bassist Charlie McCracken then formed Hardin-York-McCracken and released one critically acclaimed self-titled LP, in 1974, for Vertigo Records. Following this, Hardin worked with Roger Glover on "Butterfly Ball" and "Wizards Convention" LPs before again attempting a solo career with the singles "S'Easy"/"Strange Times" and "Summer Days"/"Seems I'm Always Going To Love You" and the album "You Cant Teach An Old Dog New Tricks". Beetween 1979 and 1981, he led Axispoint, who also featured bassist Charlie McCracken, drummer Rob Townsend and guitarist John 'Charlie' Whitney, and who released two LP's "Axispoint" and "Boast Of The Town". Following the demise of Axispoint, Hardin stayed with RCA for 1982's "Circumstantial Evidence" LP and then teamed up with Zak Starkey to work on a musical version of "Wind In The Willows" which also featured Donovan and John Entwistle. As for blues guitarist Joe Louis Walker, not only is he finding new ways of expressing himself nearly 30 years after the release of his debut album, both lyrically and musically Hornet's Nest sounds like Walker has a full tank of gas and he's ready to roll! Following up on his acclaimed 2012 album Hellfire, Walker returned to Nashville, the new blues Mecca, to once again record with talented producer, musician, and songwriter Tom Hambridge (Buddy Guy, James Cotton). Working with the same firecracker studio band that helped make Hellfire such an unqualified success guitarist Rob McNelley, bassist Tommy MacDonald, and keyboardist Reese Wynans, with Hambridge on drums Walker spanks the amps on a dozen rock-solid performances, including nine original songs that run the gamut from old-school blues to British blues-rock, and even a fine gospel moment. ...mp3-320kbps CBR, scans, info...........................................................................................................Password:zinhof FREDDIE KING - Complete King Federal Singles (2012) Of the three blues Kings, Freddie King often gets overshadowed by B.B. and Albert, so he's in need of a collection like Real Gone's 2013 The Complete King & Federal Singles, a two-disc set that rounds up all his greatest work. Sitting alongside these classics, songs so firmly embedded in our consciousness he sometimes doesn't get the credit he deserves -- songs like "Have You Ever Loved a Woman,""Hideaway,""San-Ho-Zay!,""The Stumble,""I'm Tore Down" -- there are singles where Freddie rode the wave of what was popular. He tried to dance "The Bossa Nova Watusi Twist," he flirted with a bit of funk, he got slick and greasy toward the end of the '60s, never winding up with chart success but never embarrassing himself. All this is documented on The Complete King & Federal Singles, a set that digs deeper than any collection outside of the comprehensive Bear Family boxes, but it's easier to digest and, for many, it will be preferable for that very reason. Also, it's not only easy to hear the arc of King's career; it's also easier to appreciate his brilliant highs, his stinging yet robust leads, and his full-throated vocals. All the major hits are here, of course, the songs that such guitarists as Eric Clapton copied, but what makes this so absorbing is hearing how King remained a forceful, compelling presence even when he was attempting to cash-in on trends. That's not so evident on either the early single-disc Rhino collection or the Bear Family set. By distilling King to his '60s singles, it's possible to hear all of his dimensions -- his influence, his force, his versatility -- and realize that he is every bit the titan that B.B. and Albert are. Freddie was a forceful presence and formidable figure in two of the most prominent blues scenes. In the state he was born in (and to which he eventually returned), he was known as the Texas Cannonball. For much of the Fifties and early Sixties, he was a Chicago blues legend, particularly on the citys West Side. Revered by his fans and respected by his peers, King was best-known for his searing, assertive solos and dynamic showmanship. King had numerous disciples in the rock world, including British guitarists Eric Clapton, Peter Green (cofounder of Fleetwood Mac and an alumni of John Mayalls Bluesbreakers), Mick Taylor (another Mayall alumni and member of the Rolling Stones), and Stan Webb (leader the blues-rock band Chicken Shack). In 1966, Eric Clapton covered Hide Away on Blues Breakers, his lone album with John Mayall. In the late Sixties, King changed the spelling of his first name from Freddy to Freddie. He subsequently recorded for Cotillion, Shelter (Leon Russells label) and RSO Records. His two albums for Cotillion, Freddie King Is a Blues Master (1969) and My Feeling for the Blues (1970), were produced by sax player King Curtis. Featuring 11 brand new tracks, "Man On the Rocks" is a deeply personal song-based album that reflects many of Mike's different influences. Recorded in the Bahamas, Mike's 25th studio album has been produced by Mike with legendary British producer Stephen Lipson (Jeff Beck, Paul McCartney, Annie Lennox). Man On The Rocks features players such as legendary bassist Leland Sklar (Phil Collins, Crosby, Stills & Nash, James Taylor) and drummer John Robinson (Michael Jackson, Eric Clapton, Daft Punk). Although Oldfield has worked with some of the world's most famous vocalists in the past, here he has found an incredible young talent to interpret his words, Luke Spiller from the Struts. Its working title, 'Rock' emphasises the album's directness, heard especially on the guitar-driven 'Irene', inspired by the category 3 hurricane that hit the Bahamas in 2011. However, it is as you would expect from the man who gave the world Tubular Bells and so much more besides an album of great variance and contrast; from the commercial punch of opening track, Sailing, to the beautiful folk-influenced Dreaming In The Wind to the emotional gravitas of its closer, a cover of William McDowells gospel song, I Give Myself Away. Fairport Convention drummer Dave Mattacks must have wondered what he had gotten himself into because the opener, "Loser Two Times," ais almost as close to disco as the Rolling Stones got with "Miss You." Green continues in a funky vein with "Mama Don't You Cry," as if shaking off the cobwebs and actually trying to pay attention to the current scene. He goes right back to his roots on the album's third tune with "Born Under a Bad Sign" and stays with blues derivatives the rest of the way. The album-ending title track sounds like a seven-minute version of the dreamy Green tune "Albatross," a hit for Fleetwood Mac in the '60s. Sounding more confident than on his comeback album, he seems more like the Greeny of old, although the move toward funk didn't really suit him. - cduniverse.com TRACKS: 01. Loser Two Times 02.
