MICHAEL BLOOMFIELD - Bloomfield : A Retrospective (1983)
Michael Bernard "Mike" Bloomfield (1943 1981) was an American musician, guitarist, and composer, born in Chicago, Illinois, who became one of the first popular music superstars of the 1960s to earn his reputation almost entirely on his instrumental prowess, since he rarely sang before 1969 and 1970. Respected for his fluid guitar playing, Bloomfield knew and played with many of Chicago's blues legends even before he achieved his own fame, and was one of the primary influences on the mid-to-late 1960s revival of classic Chicago and other styles of blues music. In 2003 he was ranked at number 22 on Rolling Stone's "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time"

DAVID CROSBY - Croz (2014)
One golden rule of songwriting: wait until you have something to say. And letting the field lie fallow has worked a treat for David Crosby. His first solo outing in 20 years reminds us just how artful and thought-provoking a record can be. Croz is a free-flowing, jazz and folk-imbued affair packing spellbinding vocal harmonies, soul-searching lyrics and choice contributions from the guitarist Mark Knopfler and the piccolo trumpet doyen, Wynton Marsalis. That Crosby, now 72, has hatched a cracker worthy of his output with The Byrds and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young is both impressive and pleasing. The intricate, hypnotic Whats Broken explores how emotional baggage acquired can leave certain luckless individuals labelled damaged goods (Who wants to know what desperate is / Who wants to buy whats broken, sings Croz), but the restorative flip side is the magnificent Set That Baggage Down: Everything that broke you / bury it in the sand. Most surprising, perhaps, is The Clearing, wherein acoustic guitars strummed in an expansive open-tuning are ambushed by menacing analogue synthesiser, but Croz is inspired from start to finish. - thenational.ae

ZZ TOP - XXX (1999)
The title suggests good beer and unwholesome entertainment, copious amounts of which have accompanied ZZ Top's music for the past 30 years. A decade - or two - removed from their arena-rock prime and cartoonish MTV reincarnation, ZZ Top's music has mellowed like a case of three-dollar rotgut, which is how the blues should age. Pared down, raw, and rough-edged, the Gibbons, Beard, and Hill of XXX's eight studio cuts sound increasingly like their grizzled Texas, Delta, and Southside blues heroes. The beats are tricked-up funky, Gibbons's growl and guitar are lugubrious, and the trio overall is lusty and unafraid to slow the tempo to a dirty dirge. Coupled with the band's loopy sense of subject matter and style--which ranges here from automotive theology ("Crucifixx-A-Flatt") to more prosaic concerns of boogie and t&a--are four live cuts that are often just as quirky, from Dusty Hill's slick lampoon croon of Elvis's "(Let Me Be Your) Teddy Bear" to a rave-up version of "Hey Mr. Millionaire" that features another inspired bit of ZZ goofiness--having guitar-god Jeff Beck guest...on vocals! - amazon.com

STEVE WINWOOD - The Finer Things (1995) [4CD Boxset]
As a solo artist, Steve Winwood is primarily associated with the highly polished blue-eyed soul-pop that made him a star in the '80s. Yet his turn as a slick, upscale mainstay of adult contemporary radio was simply the latest phase of a long and varied career, one that's seen the former teenage R&B shouter move through jazz, psychedelia, blues-rock, and progressive rock. Possessed of a powerful, utterly distinctive voice, Winwood was also an excellent keyboardist who remained an in-demand session musician for most of his career, even while busy with high-profile projects. That background wasn't necessarily apparent on his solo records, which established a viable commercial formula that was tremendously effective as long as it was executed with commitment.
Few artists have the back catalogue to merit a truly exhaustive box set, but Steve Winwood is certainly one of them. Indeed, the singer/songwriter/keyboardist has had so many phases over his career that it takes a box of four discs just to provide a proper overview. The first disc is evenly split between the blues-rock of the Spencer Davis Group and the folkish psychedelia of Traffic's original incarnation. After half a disc's worth of Blind Faith tracks (including two live tunes and revelatory alternate take of the band's pinnacle, "Can't Find My Way Home"), the second and third discs cover the jazz-prog of the reunited Traffic. (This version of the band combined folk, jazz, and progressive rock, while mostly steering clear of aimless noodling.) Finally, the fourth disc is an excellent summary of the well-crafted, mature pop songs that have marked Winwood' Rolling Stone - "...Given the breadth of his career, the surprising thing about Steve Winwood's THE FINER THINGS is its consistency....Some very fine things indeed..."

ERIC CLAPTON - Backless (1978) & Another Ticket (1981) [from SHM-CDs]
Following the platinum success of Slowhand, Backless continued Eric Clapton's transformation into a singer/songwriter with better-than-average chops after a lifetime of guitar godhood. Eschewing the star-studded cameos of No Reason To Cry, Clapton instead relied on his core group of the '70s: George Terry, Carl Radle, Jamie Oldaker, Dick Simms and Marcy Levy. Backless is the sixth studio album by blues rocker Eric Clapton, released in 1978. The album reached No. 8 on the pop charts. While the single "Promises" only reached No. 37 in the UK, it was a much bigger success in the US, reaching No. 9 on the Billboard charts.

Another Ticket is the seventh studio album by blues rocker Eric Clapton, released in 1981. It was his last album for Polydor Records. Produced by Tom Dowd, Another Ticket finds Clapton backed by a stellar group of musicians including Albert Lee, Gary Brooker, Henry Spinetti and Chris Stainton.

JACKSON C. FRANK - Blues Run the Game (2003) [Expanded Deluxe Edition]
Jackson Carey Frank (1943 1999) was an American folk musician. Although he released only one official album in his lifetime and never achieved much commercial success, he influenced several better-known singer-songwriters such as Paul Simon, Sandy Denny, and Nick Drake. His eponymous 1965 album, Jackson C. Frank, was produced by Paul Simon while the two of them were also playing folk clubs in England. Frank was so shy during the recording that he asked to be shielded by screens so that Paul Simon, Art Garfunkel, and Al Stewart (who also attended the recording) could not see him, claiming 'I can't play. You're looking at me.' The most famous track, "Blues Run the Game", was covered by Simon and Garfunkel, and later by Wizz Jones, Counting Crows, Colin Meloy, Bert Jansch, Laura Marling, and Robin Pecknold (White Antelope), while Nick Drake also recorded it privately. Another song, "Milk and Honey", appeared in Vincent Gallo's film The Brown Bunny, and was also covered by Fairport Convention, Nick Drake, and Sandy Denny, whom he dated for a while. During their relationship, Jackson convinced Sandy to give up nursing (then her profession) and concentrate on music full-time. Though he never achieved fame during his lifetime, his songs have been covered by many well-known artists, including Simon and Garfunkel, Counting Crows, Nick Drake, Sandy Denny, Bert Jansch, John Renbourn, Laura Marling, and Robin Pecknold (as White Antelope) of Fleet Foxes.

MAMA LION - Preserve Wildlife (1972) & Give It Everything I've Got (1973) [2010]
Mama Lion was a group destined to show off the Joplinesque voice of Lynn Carey, a sculptural blonde beauty previously in Ivar Avenue Reunion. As often with the Merryweather outputs, the music is a rather loose mix of blues and rock. Their records are now mostly remembered for their sleeves, especially the first with Lynn Carey breastfeeding a lion cub.
"Mama Lion" was a blues-rock quintet formed in the early seventies by Canadian bass player, singer-songwriter and producer Neil Merryweathe and Lynn (Catherine) Carey. Other band members included Coffi Hall (drums), Rick Gaxiola (guitar) and Jim Howard (soundtrack composer James Newton Howard). This lineup recorded this debut album "Preserve Wildlife" (1972) with the now famous flypaper with Lynn Carey nurse a lion cub. Surprisingly, the band plays honest hard rock'n'roll and Lynn Carey vocals are far from sweet, as you would expect of your image. She sings (think "yells" describes it better), in the form of Janis Joplin, but with a lower tone and a voice that sometimes resembles old-time blues singers. Lynn has an IQ of over 160, so you can be blond, smart and beautiful - and sing the blues!
In this second disc of Mama Lion have some lineup changes, guitarist Rick Gaxiola left the band and was replaced Alan Hurtz, in addition, the band has the support of two musicians, Ed Mikenas and Bob Rose. "Give It Everything I've Got" can keep the same proposal the previous disc, making a blues rock with enough pianos. With the end of the group Lynn Carey continued to follow her modeling career reached a record, "Good Times" in the late '80s, Neil Merryweather continued following his solo projects, reaching record 3 more albums during the decade seventy: James Newton Howard was the one with the most extensive discography, making tracks for the "Film Score".

ERNIE WILLIAMS & THE WILDCATS - I Remember (1995) & Sister (1998)
Born in Virginia and raised in a plantation shack, Williams fell in love with the blues after hearing artists like Howlin' Wolf and Sonny Boy Williamson blasted out on 50,000-watt WLAC-AM out of Nashville, listening on a small, battery-powered radio. Williams started playing guitar at the age of 13, picking tobacco during the day and picking on his instrument at night. He began playing parties and Friday night fish fries as a teen, and at the age of 19 he took the $9 he'd spent a year saving and jumped a bus to New York City. Settling down in Harlem, the young blues guitarist made a name for himself during the 1950s, playing amateur nights at the famed Apollo Theater as well as clubs throughout the city, often performing seven nights a week.
In the early 1960s, Williams re-located to the Albany, New York area and set aside his music for a while to work a series of odd jobs to provide for his family. Williams would re-emerge during the 1970s, forming a new band and playing everywhere and anywhere that would have him. Williams would become a staple of the hardscrabble Albany blues scene, and through the years the guitarist and his various bands would open for such headliners as B.B. King and Aretha Franklin. During his lengthy career, Williams released six CDs, including 1998's acclaimed Sister, with his band the Wildcats, and 2004's Live At Revolution Hall album.
Williams was well-known for his generosity as well, often performing benefit shows and fundraisers for food banks and other non-profits. A charismatic and dynamic performer with deep roots in the blues, Williams never failed to entertain a crowd, and while he sojourned beyond his home region infrequently, playing festivals and even as far west as Buddy Guy's Legends club in Chicago, he always returned home.

EARTH OPERA - Earth Opera (1968) & The Great American Eagle Tragedy (1969)
Earth Opera was an American psychedelic rock group, active during 1967-1969 and featuring Peter Rowan and David Grisman.
The stylistic explorations pursued by the Beatles in 1966-1967, and the commercial success the group continued to enjoy, inspired other popular musicians to be similarly ambitious and persuaded record companies to take chances on more daring music. Earth Opera is a good example. The Boston-based group's self-titled debut LP featured a heady mixture of pop, rock, folk, jazz, and classical elements in involved arrangements played on such unusual instruments as mandocello and harpsichord. Less a rock band than a highly eclectic chamber orchestra, Earth Opera played in an arty style that suited singer/songwriter/guitarist Peter Rowan's songs, with their complicated structures and highly poetic lyrics. Rowan sang those lyrics, which dealt here and there with anti-war and more generalized sentiments of social dissatisfaction, in a distanced, somewhat artificial tone of voice, using an accent that sounded vaguely British, even when he was mentioning the Red Sox. But he was rarely so specific, more often concerning himself with "the stage inside my mind" or "the picket fenceposts of your mind," internal landscapes in which wordplay and allusions substituted for specific meaning. It was a psychedelic language matched by the music, which hurried and slowed, making room for sudden solos and unexpected juxtapositions of instruments. The result ultimately may have been too ornate and inaccessible for a pop recording, even in 1968, but Earth Opera was very much of its time.
TRACKS: 01. The Red Sox Are Winning 02. As It Is Before 03. Dreamless 04. To Care At All 05. Home Of The Brave 06. The Child Bride 07. Close Your Eyes And Shut The Door 08. Time And Again 09. When You Were Full Of Wonder 10. Death By Fire
The Great American Eagle Tragedy is a second and last album by the psychedelic band Earth Opera, recorded in 1969. It is marked by departure of Bill Stevenson and his harpsichord sound, using more guest musicians than on the debut album and use of pedal steel by Bill Keith. The album also had better success on charts then the previous one, but soon after, the group disbanded, paving the way for solo careers mainly for Pete Rowan and David Grisman.

DAVID LINDLEY - El Rayo-X (1981) & Win This Record! (1982)
David Lindley is an American musician who is notable for his work with Jackson Browne, Warren Zevon, and other rock musicians. He has worked extensively in other genres as well, performing with artists as varied as Curtis Mayfield and Dolly Parton. He has mastered such a wide variety of instruments that Acoustic Guitar magazine referred to Lindley, not as a multi-instrumentalist, but instead as a "maxi-instrumentalist" in a cover story about his career to date in 2005. El Rayo-X is David Lindley's first album, released in 1981.
TRACKS: 01. She Took Off My Romeos 02. Bye Bye Love 03. Mercury Blues 04. Quarter Of A Man 05. Ain't No Way 06. Twist and Shout 07. Rayo X 08. Your Old Lady 09. Don't Look Back 10. Petit Fleur 11. Tu-Ber-Cu-Lucas And The Sinus Blues 12. Pay The Man
Following up their excellent debut and a season of intense touring, David Lindley and his crack band (now named El Rayo-X) recorded their second Elektra album. It turns out that they actually bettered the near perfection of the first. Opening with an excellent version of Etta James classic "Something's Got a Hold on Me," this track proves how tight the band had became. Lindley's slide guitar work is impressive as always. As an added bonus, the band's vocal harmonies are extremely tight and a welcome addition. A version of the Cajun classic "Brother John" held great significance at the time shortly after John Lennon's death and again contains some of Lindley's best slide work to date. A rambling, fun record, Win This Record is one of the finest rock records of the '80s. - allmusic.com

FREEDOM - Black On White (1969) & Freedom At Last (1969) & Freedom (1970)
A spin-off of Procol Harum, Freedom was formed by guitarist Ray Royer and drummer Bobby Harrison. Both of them were in Procol Harum's lineup at the outset for their debut "A Whiter Shade of Pale" single, but were ousted almost immediately when Procol singer, Gary Brooker, enlisted his former bandmates from the Paramounts, Robin Trower and Barry Wilson, as replacements. Freedom's early sound, perhaps unsurprisingly, echoed Procol Harum's in its prominent use of organ and piano, as well as heavy rock guitar, and like Procol Harum's early records, captured late British psychedelia as it was starting to inch toward progressive rock.
Freedom wasn't a Procol Harum clone, though, with a somewhat poppier take on psychedelia that was closer to Traffic than Procol Harum. Their initial lineup only released two singles in 1968 before breaking up, also recording a soundtrack for an obscure Italian film by Dino De Laurentis, Attraction/Black on White. The soundtrack LP was given a limited release in Italy -- so limited, in fact, that the group members themselves were unaware that it had come out. Recorded with noted future producers Eddie Kramer and Glyn Johns engineering, this was reissued on CD in 1999, and is actually a pretty good if derivative slice of late-'60s British psychedelia.

By the time 1997 came along Rodgers had a set of new original material written and a solid band behind him so set about recording his third solo album. JANE BIRKIN - Best Of (2004)
Jane Birkin is an English actress and singer who lives in France. She is perhaps best known for her relationship with Serge Gainsbourg in the 1970s. In recent years she has written her own album, directed a film and become an outspoken proponent of democracy in Burma.
Birkin emerged in the Swinging London scene of the 1960s, appearing briefly in the 1966 film Blowup, and as the fantasy-like model in the psychedelic Wonderwall from 1968. That same year, she auditioned in France for the lead female role in Slogan. Though she did not speak French, she won the role. She co-starred with Serge Gainsbourg, and performed with him on the film's theme song, "La chanson de slogan" the first of many collaborations between the two. In 1969, she and Gainsbourg released the duet "Je t'aime... moi non plus" ("I love you... me neither"). Gainsbourg originally wrote the song for Brigitte Bardot. The song caused a scandal for its sexual explicitness, and was banned by radio stations in Italy, Spain, and the UK. "Je t'aime" made UK chart history in that on 4 October 1969 and the following week on 11 October, the song was at two different chart positions even though it is the same song, the same artists, and the same recorded version. The only difference was that they were on different record labels.

JANIS IAN - Breaking Silence (1993)
Janis Ian is an American songwriter, singer, musician, columnist and science fiction author. Ian first entered the folk music scene while still a teenager in the mid-1960s. Most active musically in that decade and the 1970s, she has continued recording into the 21st century. She has won two Grammy Awards, the first in 1975 for her song "At Seventeen", and the second in 2013 for Best Spoken Word Album, for her autobiography, Society's Child (nearly 40 years later).
"Breaking Silence" finds Ian ditching her past waifishness for a confident, mature, contemporary acoustic approach relying mostly on spare guitar and piano textures. Opening with "All Roads to the River" (also recorded by John Mellencamp), Breaking Silence includes among its highlights the Holocaust-survivor tale "Tattoo" and the dramatic half-a cappella, half-syncopated-rocker title track.
TRACKS: 01. All Roads To The River 02. Ride Me Like A Wave 03. Tattoo 04. Guess You Had To Be There 05. What About The Love 06. His Hands 07. Walking On Sacred Ground 08. This Train Still Runs 09. Through The Years 10. This House 11. Some Peoples Lives 12. Breaking Silence 13. Ride Me Like A Wave-Wet Mix 14. This Train Still Runs (Live)

RUTHIE FOSTER - Live At Antone's (2011)
Ruthie Foster has a cult/fanatic following. People either have never heard of her or they think she has one of the best voices of our time. Her CD Live at Antones shows why her voice has received such notice. It is husky and soulful but never overdone. She wails at the top of her register when she needs to, but then brings it back in an easy manner. Her singing possesses a familiarity that welcomes listeners, and her onstage persona is good- natured and inviting.
Her song choice is similarly appealing. She takes Sister Rosetta Tharpes Up Above My Head (I Hear Music in the Air) and transforms it from an upbeat gospel rocker into an eerie meditation. Lucinda Williams Fruits of My Labor moves from its dirge-like vibe to an inspirational number. However, the remaining songs would benefit from imaginative arrangements. Aside from her voice, there is little to distinguish the songs from other folk/roots rock music out there. Her voice digs in and really goes for it all over this disc, but the songs rarely go beyond third gear. It takes special guest guitarist Papa Mali to kick up Fosters song Heal Yourself, and other songs could use that kind of goosing. Live at Antones is a good record, even great at times, but it doesnt equal the talent of its leader.

JOHN FOGERTY - Wrote A Song For Everyone (2013) @FLAC HDTracks & MP3
John Fogerty is one of the most respected songwriters in the history of Rock and Roll. On his new album "Wrote A Song For Everyone," Fogerty produces a masterpiece, drawing from his classic songbook of hits and collaborating with some of the biggest superstars in popular music. Alongside these stellar collaborations, Fogerty has also penned two brand new original songs for the album. 14 songs, 16 special guests, one songwriter, and one amazing album.
Released on John Fogertys 68th birthday, Wrote A Song For Everyone is a fresh spin on a dozen tunes from the Californians Creedence Clearwater Revival and solo days, plus two new tracks. Fogerty brings in the great and good from rock and country music for a series of cameo duets and string-driven duels. Its an ambitious collection with its moments of excess, but overall the roots veteran pulls it off.
Download: Q: Will I really hear the difference between the various formats
A: You should hear a substantial difference when listening to the music on a home stereo. The music will sound cleaner, the bass will be tighter and you will notice a higher definition in all the instruments. If you are going to pay for digital music, you might as well own it in the highest-quality format available.

MIKE BLOOMFIELD - From His Head To His Heart To His Hands (2014)
Mike Bloomfield fans and they are legion have been waiting two long decades and more for Columbia, now Sony, to get around to issuing a definitive collection of music by America's original guitar hero. There have been rumors for years that a Bloomfield box was in the works, but those rumors invariably proved to be only rumors with little basis in fact. Until now.
Guitarist Mike Bloomfield never fully got his due as one of the go-to sidemen of his generation or for his importance as a common thread in the patchwork of genres that changed the face of Rock 'n' Roll in the 1960s and 1970s - until now. Bloomfield's incredible career is chronicled in From His Head to His Heart to His Hands, which features released and unreleased gems from solo sessions to live performances from The Fillmore East and Fillmore West, The Bottom Line and other historic venues. This set includes a DVD that contains a fascinating new mini-documentary combining vintage audio interviews with Bloomfield and live performances with new reflections from his friends, collaborators and admirers.
